MARTIN LEITNER, Assoc. AIA, Designer, joined Urban Studio in 2007. Leitner has experience in utilizing Los Angeles' small-lot subdivision ordinance, sustainable design practices, commercial and residential developments, and developing urban design and feasibility studies for private developers and public agencies.
At Urban Studio Leitner worked on the design of two commercial projects on Ventura Boulevard in Encino, California and oversaw the site plan review process for a 17 acre swap meet in San Fernando, California. Other projects include design of small lot sub-division LEED certified workforce townhomes in South Los Angeles for Enterprise Homeownership Partners (EHOP). Leitner’s participation in urban design projects include work on the strategic plan for the revitalization of Van Nuys Boulevard in Pacoima, California, and a zoning study for the City of Pasadena to reassess development opportunities and limitations of the North Lake Specific Plan. Other studies include a feasibility study for development at the Aviation Boulevard Metro Station.
Leitner's previous work in Europe engaged him in urban renewal projects in several German cities. In the Frankfurt Region, Leitner worked with public housing developers to assess and improve the urban design quality of five large housing developments. In 2004 Leitner collaborated with John Kaliski on a published study of strip malls in Los Angeles.
Leitner studied economics at University College London, UK and holds a professional degree in architecture from Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany. In 2009 Leitner co-founded and chairs the Emerging Urban Designers Forum of the American Institute of Architects Los Angeles chapter.
